Madaripur Museum: An excellent institution for the preservation of history

Madaripur district is one of the oldest and prosperous townships of Bangladesh. This district has thousands of years of history, tradition and cultural richness. Anti-British movement in 1971 AD. Madaripur district has outstanding and glorious contribution in its great liberation war. Despite being a very ancient and rich history region, there is no institutional framework for preserving this history, heritage and culture in Madaripur district or its adjoining areas. As a result, with the passage of time, many historical signs, incidents and examples have been lost in the abyss of oblivion and are constantly being lost. But museums are one of the most effective means of making future generations aware of history, traditions and culture and preserving that history for future generations.

With an aim to preserve the overall history, heritage and culture, the district administration, Madaripur took the initiative to establish a museum named 'Madaripur Museum'. March 31, 2023 AD. On the date Mr. Md. Shajahan Khan, MP, President, Standing Committee on Ministry of Liberation War Affairs attended as the chief guest and inaugurated the Madaripur Museum. At that time, prominent people of Madaripur district, political leaders, freedom fighters and heads of various departments were present.

Historical old treasury building owned by the district administration has been converted into a museum to establish the museum. This building has a unique historical contribution in the Great War of Liberation in 1971. When Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence in the early hours of March 26, preliminary preparations for the Great War of Liberation began in Madaripur district like other parts of the country. Sarvadaliya Sangam Committee and Student Struggle Parishad were formed in Madaripur district for the purpose of all-out preparations for the war. Mr. Benazir Ahmed Tipu writes on pages 162-163 of his book 'Muktijudda Madaripur', "From March 27, preparations for the military training of liberation war began with students and youth in Madaripur town. Although there were brave freedom fighters like Air Force personnel Alamgir Hossain and Matiar Rahman Howladar, Army Subedar Abdul Haque for training, there were no weapons for training. In such a situation Syed Rezaul Hayat, the then Sub-Divisional Administrator came forward. He himself stood up and handed over the 303 rifles kept in the Madaripur treasury to the freedom fighters. The freedom fighters used to take weapons from the treasury every day and after training, they would deposit the weapons in the treasury again. As a result of this initiative, preparations for the great war of liberation in Madaripur district developed in a well-organized manner. Resistance among the public increases confidence for war. Soon Sub-Divisional Administrator Syed Rezaul Hayat and Sub-Divisional Treasury Building became the center of preparation and organization of the great liberation war in Madaripur district. The great liberation war was organized in Madaripur district with rifles kept in the Treasury building. This building has an outstanding contribution in the great liberation war.”

Later in 1992 AD. On the date Madaripur District Collectorate was shifted from the earlier Shakuni Lakepar and established at its present location. As a result the District Treasury was shifted to the new Collectorate building. Over time, the old treasury building turned into an unusable and abandoned building. This building is located in the heart of Madaripur city, on the banks of the scenic Shakuni Lake. Due to the location of the building in a very important place, the greedy eyes of local miscreants fell on this building and land. The old treasury building and a portion of the land were expropriated in the name of Sarvasva organization, which was vacated after the establishment of the museum.

In this regard, Madaripur District Deputy Commissioner and Madaripur Museum President Mr. Mohammad Marufur Rashid Khan said, "This museum established by the district administration has opened a new door to preserve the history, heritage and culture of Bangladesh including Madaripur district. Since its establishment, this museum has been making efforts to collect and preserve various historical artifacts of Madaripur district. Already, more than a hundred rare paintings of Madaripur's progeny Kazi Anwar Hossain, an Ekushey medalist painter, have been collected as a gift to the Madaripur Museum. Public representatives, political leaders, brave freedom fighters, dignitaries and conscious civil society of Madaripur district have been involved for the establishment and management of the museum. The constitution of Madaripur Museum has already been formulated and approved. Prominent personalities of Madaripur district have been involved as trustee members. This museum has played a leading role in preserving the history and heritage of the district.

Curator of Madaripur Museum and Additional District Magistrate Md. Nazmul Islam said that, "The district administration had to implement a huge effort to bring the museum to its current position. The building has been taken under the control of the district administration by evicting the illegal encroachment of the old treasury building. As the old treasury building was unusable, the building was renovated and made usable. The place was closed at night because it used to be a hangout for drug addicts. A security wall has been built. Electricity connection and other works have been completed. Currently the museum is open for visitors from Sunday to Thursday. Entry fee is completely free for any visitor to this museum.”
